Behind the scenes

Behind the Art

Every Fluff design starts somewhere — a sketch, a story, a ridiculous cat expression or an idea that refuses to leave my head.

This is where those ideas slowly turn into finished artwork, pins, stickers and other little fluffy things.

From idea to something you can hold

From sketch to product

The finished piece is usually the last stop in a much longer process of sketches, revisions, samples and tiny decisions.

1

The idea

It might begin with a real animal, a story, a silly expression or a half-formed idea scribbled down somewhere.

2

The illustration

I sketch, redraw, tweak colours and keep going until the personality feels right.

3

The sample

Artwork then becomes a real object.. usually followed by more adjustments, prototypes and tiny detail changes.

4

The finished fluff

Eventually it becomes something you can pin, stick, cuddle, gift or bring home.

The real animals behind the art

Sometimes the story comes first.

Some Fluff designs begin with a real animal and the human who loves them.

Their personality, quirks, challenges and stories shape the artwork in ways I could never invent from scratch.

That’s especially true of the Special Fluffs — animals like Reecie, Phoebe and the Purrmaids whose stories have become whole projects of their own.

The tiny details

It rarely works perfectly the first time.

Samples get changed. Colours get tweaked. Shapes get adjusted. Sometimes an idea goes through several versions before it finally feels right.

That imperfect, slightly obsessive process is part of what I love about making things. The finished piece may look simple, but there are usually a lot of tiny decisions hiding behind it.
