Some projects start with a product idea.
This one started with a very special cat named Reecie.
Reecie is a super loving, sweet, special needs kitty. He was born with congenital paralysis affecting his hind legs and is missing his left hip socket which makes his leg flop all over the place.
Every so often, I will come across a photo that feels so special, I just have to illustrate it. This was one of those moments. There was just something so sweet, magical and unmistakably Reecie. What started as a single photo soon became the beginning of something much bigger..
So the photo became a sketch. The sketch became an illustration. The illustration became a pin, sticker, and the inspiration behind the Sleeping Kitties set. But we couldn’t stop there - there was still more Reecie magic to share.. So we turned him into something soft, cuddly, and full of love.. The Sweet Dreams Reecie Plushie
We wanted to accurately capture Reecie’s typical sleeping position - with his left leg flopped up toward his head, and his right leg tucked under his tail like a little chicken wing. This pose is pure Reecie. His quirks, his differences, and his unique anatomy are all part of what makes him so special. Instead of hiding those differences, we chose to honour them. So it was important that the plushie celebrated Reecie exactly as he is.
Most plushies go through one or two prototypes before they are finalised. Sweet Dreams Reecie went through six! The very first prototype dates all the way back to 2022, when the idea was first discussed. From there, the design went through many rounds of revisions, with every tiny detail carefully considered. We were met with almost every delay imaginable.. But after a long journey of samples, setbacks, and so many little decisions, Sweet Dreams Reecie finally came to life..
We created a limited run of just 100 Reecie plushies - so they are as special as the kitty who inspired it.
Each one has a numbered tag and comes with a matching numbered collector’s card/certificate of adoption, along with a mini art print and special keepsakes from the project.
There are now only a small number of plushies left.
